Start building your very own STEM playground with Lynn Lilly!
For today’s virtual learning break, we’re engineering a DIY marble racing game. This exercise is a great way to let the kids have some fun outside of the traditional classroom environment.
At the same time, it will help reinforce important core subjects surrounding science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Prepare the kids for their academic journey with this DIY activity! Decorate a cardboard box with your favorite colors, put together tubes and ramps, and then grab a stopwatch to time how long it takes your marble to race down. Find us on social media @GreatWolfLodge and tag #pawsnplay to show us your progress!
Supplies:
- Cardboard Box
- Scissors
- Decorative Tape
- Marbles
- Liquid Glue
- Pencil
- Box Cutter
- Two Craft Rolls
Time to Craft: 45 minutes
Step 1: Carefully cut the cardboard box in half and remove the top. This is an adult job.
Step 2:Â Tape over the rough edges of the cardboard box with decorative tape.
Step 3: Add additional tape on the side of the box for decoration.
Step 4: Cut the craft rolls into pieces. Set aside.
Step 5: At the top of the cardboard box, trace and cut a circular hole the same size as the roll. Slide the craft roll into the hole.
Step 6: Cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the cardboard box. Leaving enough room for it fit against the cardboard roll.
Step 7: Bend the end of the sheet of cardboard, apply glue, and tilt slightly inside of the box to make a ramp.
Step 8: Apply glue to a craft roll and place vertically on the edge of the cardboard wall so it lines up with the ramp.
Step 9: Cut another piece of cardboard to create a second ramp for your marble.
Step 10: Cut a narrow and long piece of cardboard and cover with decorative tape.
Step 11: Apply glue and place this piece of cardboard on the ramp to use as a guard rail for the marble.
Step 12: Drop the marble down the first craft roll and watch your marble fall down the tubes and ramps!
